Riverside Golf Club, nestled along the scenic banks of the Ohio River in Mason, WV, has been a beloved local landmark since its opening in 1964. Originally a nine-hole course, it quickly became a popular destination for golfers in the area. But the course’s true journey began in 1974, when Gary and Bob Roush purchased Riverside after a casual conversation between Gary and the owner. After a round of golf, Gary asked if the owner was planning to retire soon. The response was, “Yeah, you want to buy it?” And with that, a new chapter began for Riverside and the Roushes.
In 1975, Gary and Bob’s vision for the course expanded as they undertook a significant project—transforming Riverside from a nine-hole layout to an 18-hole championship course. To celebrate the completion of this milestone, on May 6, 1976, an eight-year-old Mitchell Roush–Riverside’s current Superintendent–hit the ceremonial first shot from the tee box of the newly added 10th hole.
The growth of Riverside has continued over the years. In April 2001, after years of planning and hard work, the Roush family, including Gary’s sons, Ty (PGA Head Professional), and Mitch (Head Superintendent), opened a brand-new clubhouse, offering golfers a spacious pro shop, a full-service restaurant featuring a wrap-around porch overlooking the river, and a banquet room for events. Then, in 2008, the current fourth and fifth holes were developed and the course introduced a driving range, further enhancing the golfing experience for players of all skill levels.
Throughout the years, Riverside Golf Club has earned a reputation not just for its beauty, history, and amenities, but also for its role in competitive golf. The course has proudly hosted three LPGA mini tour tournaments, twelve USGA Public Links qualifiers, and numerous WVGA qualifying events.
“It’s rare for a golf course owner to also run the business daily, on and off the course. I love that Riverside is a family-operated business. I take great pride in having built up this course to serve our community and the surrounding areas, and even more so in having done it alongside my sons and family,” said owner Gary Roush.
Today, Riverside Golf Club stands as a testament to the vision, persistence, and hard work of the Roush family. The course and its staff, members, guests, and friends continue to serve as a social hub for the WV/Ohio area, supporting many of the area schools as their home course, hosting numerous charitable golf outings throughout the year, and serving as a community gathering place that brings people together.
